Non-Local Affectiveness (2014)

In the installation NLAFF, exploring non-local affectiveness from a poetic perspective, the audience is invited to join a remote staring experiment. Set up in the center of the gallery, a suspended cube hides the person that is meditating on the top of a wooden base. The interior of the cube is illuminated by a red light – a reference to the Ganzfeld technique traditionally used in psi experiments to test extrasensory perception (ESP).

From the outside of the suspended cube, the audience is suggested to focus on staring, looking at a live video of the performer projected onto the surface. In a second layer of the projection, vectors in Processing code, behave accordingly to the measurements of electrodes connected to the body of the performer - a method named galvanic skin response (GSR). The electrical conductance of the skin varies depending on the amount of sweat on the skin that is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system – if the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system is highly aroused, then sweat gland activity also increases, which in turn increases skin conductance. In this way, skin conductance can be used as a measure of the way we can non-locally affect each other – entangled interferences in our emotional state.

* A special thanks to Victoria Vesna and the students of her Honor Class HNRS 177, who enthusiastically joined the psi experiments on remote staring, remote viewing and telepathy during the workshop <<NON-LOCAL AFFECTIVENESS>>, in April 25th 2014, set up in collaboration with Mick Lorusso, and the UCLA Art|Sci Center's NanoLab high-school students who joined a new version of the workshop set up together with the team of instructors and counselors, in July 23rd, 2014 at the CNSI - California NanoSystems Institute. A special thanks also to the students of the workshop <<Living Backwards>> held at the Continuum Festival in Recife, Brazil, From May 17-19,2014, at Centro Cultural dos Correios.
